MISR will be hosting Dr. John Young for three public lectures to be given on:

  • Monday March 28, 2016, 5:30pm

    Title: Sudan Peoples' Liberation Movement in Opposition: Challenges and Divisions.

  • Wednesday March 30 2016, 2:15pm

    Title: South Sudan's Civil War: a Failure of Leadership or a Failure of the International Community.

  • Friday 1 April 2016, 2:15pm

    Title: Co-opting Popular Struggles: the Nuer White Army in South Sudan's Civil War.

The event is open to the Public. Audience attendance is limited to 60 persons. Pre-register with MISR Library.

John Young did his PhD field studies in Political Science in Ethiopia, taught at Addis Ababa University, and worked for the Canadian government on the Sudan peace process.  In Sudan he has held positions as a military peace monitor, a political advisor for The Carter Center, researcher for Small Arms Survey, and has published many academic articles on governance, security, and peace issues. John has written two books - Peasant Revolution in Ethiopia:  Tigray Peoples’ Liberation Front:  1975 - 1991 (Cambridge University Press:  1997) and The Fate of Sudan:  Origins and Consequences of a Flawed Peace Process (Zed Books:  2012).  Since the outbreak of civil war in South Sudan in December 2013 he has written about ten unpublished analyses on the conflict for USAID and one published article on the SPLM-In Opposition for Small Arms Survey.
