Dr Samson Bezabeh, a Research Fellow at MISR will be giving a seminar, "Spectacles of  Migration : Horn of Africa and Middle East Civil Wars" on Wednesday June 28 2017.

While migration from the Horn of Africa to Yemen via the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden is a very challenging undertaking and the Yemeni government has a poor record regarding the treatment of migrant groups, the destabilisation of Yemen since the beginning of the Arab Spring in 2011 and the descent of the country into civil war in March 2015 has worsened the precariousness of migrants. This article shows how migrants’ vulnerability became a media spectacle that in turn became essential for the production of simplified narratives. The article demonstrates how the crisis-induced narrative, beyond showing the migrant life, became instrumental in redefining the history of places. It also shows how in conjunction with already-existing underlying factors the narrative became instrumental in the hardening of social boundaries, particularly between Christians and Muslims. The article demonstrates that the media-based narratives were able to do this because of their sole focus on crisis rather than the long historical interchange of place and people and by masking existing social complexity. To demonstrate its point the article focuses on the Horn of Africa migrant, particularly on Ethiopian migrants who came to be stranded in the Yemeni civil war.

Papers are available from MISR Library.

The event is open to the Public. Audience attendance is limited to 60 persons. Pre-register with MISR Library or email:
