Congratulations to the following applicants for being admitted to the Interdisciplinary PhD in Social Studies at Makerere Institute of Social Research.
Stella Nyanzi is presenting a paper entitled ‘“How do I show the Doctor the sores in my anus?” Self-reported Challenges of MSM who use public health facilities in Uganda’ at the 1st African Conference on Key Populations in the HIV Epidemic which is running from 19th to 21st August 2013 at the Kunduchi Beach Hotel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This conference is jointly organized by Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, University of Oslo and UNAIDS and has 150 delegates from 22 countries. Dr. Stella Nyanzi has been awarded the All Africa House Fellowship for 2013, to be held at the University of Cape Town. During the fellowship period, she will be hosted by Dr. Robert Mattes (http://www.cssr.uct.ac.za/

This is a time for anniversaries. This year, we have observed two anniversaries in the 50s this year: the anniversary to mark the ascension of H.H. the Aga Khan, and the independence of Uganda. I shall focus on the latter event in these remarks.

Dr. Stella Nyanzi is one of three scholars selected to be an African Studies Association (ASA) Presidential Fellow for 2013. Founded in 1957, the ASA is the leading North American organization that promotes the study of Africa in all academic disciplines and for contemporary practitioners. The three ASA Presidential Fellows will present their work at the African Studies Association annual meeting in Baltimore, MD, from 21st - 24th
