POSITION OF DIRECTOR MAKERERE UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL RESEARCH (MISR)

1. Reporting:

The Director, MISR reports to the Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic Affairs, Makerere University.

2. Duties & Responsibilities
a. The Director provides intellectual and strategic leadership to the Institute. He or she is the overall academic and administrative supervisor to the institute;
b. Strengthens the MPhil/PhD programme of the Institute as the flag bearer of Makerere University;
c. Initiates and promotes research in line with the development of the MPhil/PhD programme;
d. Mobilizes funds for the Institute (Nationally and Internationally);
e. Chairs the Academic Board of MISR
f. Secretary to the Institute’s Board of Studies once it is functional;
g. Any other related duties as may be necessary for the achievement of the above objectives.

3. Required Qualifications
a. A PhD Degree;
b. A minimum of ten (10) years of proven experience in research;
c. Twelve (12) publications of which eight (8) are articles in refereed Journals or Books, and two (2) are single-authored books;
d. Proven research leadership.

4. Other Essential Requirements
a. Evidence of successful grant proposals;
b. Ability to provide institutional leadership;
c. Recognized service to the community;
d. Membership of professional organizations;
e. International acclaim.

5. Experience
A minimum of ten (10) years, five of which must have been at senior leadership position in an academic institution.

6. Area of Specialization
The candidate should have knowledge expertise in any discipline within the following clusters that comprise the MPhil/PhD programme at MISR:
a. Political Studies
b. Political Economy
c. Historical Studies
d. Literary and Cultural Studies

7. Tenure of Appointment
The appointment shall be for a period of five years with effect from the date of assumption of duty, subject to renewal for another five years.


8. Remuneration
The position of the Director Makerere Institute of Social Research is at the Makerere University M3 Salary Scale.

9. Key Outputs of the Position
a. Continuity and development of the MPhil/PhD programme;
b. Development of the Institute’s research and publication programme;
c. Mobilization of national and international funding;
d. Regularly reporting to the MISR Academic Board and the Institute’s Board of Studies

Principal, College of Humanities and Social Sciences 

2. Key, Duties and Responsibilities 
a. The Director provides intellectual and strategic leadership to the Institute. He or she is the overall academic and administrative supervisor to the institute.
b. Strengthen the MPhil/PhD programme of the Institute as the flag bearer of Makerere University;
c. Initiates and promotes research in line with the development of the MPhil/PhD programme;
d. Mobilizes funds for the Institute (Nationally and Internationally);
e. Chairs the Academic Board of MISR;
f. Secretary to the Institute’s Board of Studies once it is functional.
g. Any other related duties as may be necessary for the achievement of the above objectives.
