Dr. Giuliano Martiniello presented a paper at the international conference on “Global Land Grabbing”, Cornell University, Ithaca, 17-19 November 2012, organized by the Land Deals Politics Initiative network (LDPI). The paper, titled: “The Accumulation of Dispossession and Resistance in Northern Uganda” explored the complex relation between current processes of land dispossession and popular/community peasant resistance. By analyzing the historical and colonial character of land dispossession it argues that the current wave of land grabbing, which has Eastern Africa among its loci, has to be interpreted as a persistent and ongoing process of capitalist accumulation by dispossession/primitive accumulation. The article, which interrogates the nature, lineages and dynamics of escalating social struggles over land, has been selected for publication in the forthcoming Special Issue of the Journal of Peasant Studies on “Land Grabs and Politics from Below”.
