BOOK REVIEW: Yahya Sseremba: America and the Production of Islamic Truth in Uganda.

Broadly, America and the Production of Islamic Truth in Uganda is a study on “power and subjection to power, not violent extremism and how it is countered” (p. 9). To this endeavour, the US's global war on terror (WoT) and its corresponding interventions, in this case the Uganda Islamic education (Madrasa) reform proposals, provided Yahya Sseremba with an entry point. In Uganda, the US proposes numerous reforms, among them the idea of homogenising the hitherto diverse Madrasa curricula (pp. 97–109).

Gender and the bifurcated state: Women in Uganda’s traditional authority

Abstract This article introduces Mahmood Mamdani’s bifurcated state theory to the study of gender and power. The purpose is to unveil the structure of the state that produces conflicting experiences of elite women in Africa’s two public spheres, namely, the civil realm and the customary domain. In recent decades, privileged women have occupied political leadership positions in Uganda and Africa.

Slaves of State, Intellectuals of Development: A Genealogy of Development in Ethiopia.

The GENESIS of this book can be traced back to 2012 when I was taking a course in the major debate on the study of Africa at the Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR). Anchored on the state and political subject formation on the continent, the course covers thematic issues such as the state and state formation, slavery, colonialism, nationalism, and development. Reading interdisciplinary literature, we raised critical questions. Getting the question right was the holy grail of the scholarship of political knowledge at the MISR.
